Coast based Kenya Basketball Premier League club KPA will not be traveling to Ivory Coast for the FIBA African club championships. This was communicated officially to the club’s management on Wednesday by sponsors Kenya Ports Authority.
The team that finished second behind Eagle Wings in the Zone 5 Basketball competition held in Kampala a few weeks ago will now shift their attention to winning the 2012 KBF league.
“We received the communication on Wednesday. The girls were devastated but we have talked to them as a team and we are determined to shift our attention to the league. We want to win it this year so we can represent Kenya in next year’s Zone 5 club championships.” KPA coach Anthony Ojukwu told michezoafrika.com
KPA took part in last year’s FIBA competition held in Lagos and they needed over six million shillings to finance their travel to Ivory Coast this year.
The other Kenyan club Eagle Wings who defeated KPA in the finals to qualify for the FIBA games as Zone 5 champions are expected to travel for the games in Ivory Coast. The team has also been conducting a series of fundraising initiatives to be able to meet their 3.5 Million shillings budget for the trip.
