Kenya representatives to this year’s FIBA Africa Basketball Club Championships Eagle Wings on Wednesday afternoon received a major boost when Nairobi Mayor George Aladwa donated 100,000 shillings towards the team’s traveling Kitty.
The Kenyan champions Eagle Wings ,a self Supported basketball club, depart Nairobi on Thursday morning for Ivory Coast where they will be taking part in the club championships starting 18th of October.
The regional champions’ 3.5 Million shillings budget will be partly funded by the government through the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports who paid for the team’s air tickets and accommodation in Ivory Coast.
Recently, the club held a fundraiser at the Basketball gymnasium in what was dubbed Saturday night basketball for Eagle Wings. The match raised 255,000 shillings gross (200,000 net minus expenditure of stadium hire and floodlights payments).
Eagle Wings team member Evelyn Kedogo while acknowledging Aladwa’s support thanked the mayor for coming in at the right time to support the club as they head for Africa’s biggest show promising that they will do their best to post good results in their maiden appearance at the competition.
In 2010 the club’s dreams of taking part in a similar competition in Tunisia were squashed after the team failed to raise to 3.5 Million shillings to facilitate the trip.
Another Kenyan club KPA who had also qualified for the competition after finishing second in the regional qualifying tournament in Kampala withdrew a couple of weeks ago due to lack of sufficient funds to finance the trip. KPA were last year’s representatives in the FIBA African championships that was held in Nigeria.
