The 2011 KBF Premier League defending champions Co-op Bank on Sunday evening beat arch rivals and fellow bankers Kenya Commercial Bank 79-77 in an exciting encounter played at the Nyayo Gymnasium.
The match was forced to go into added time as the two teams were level (70-70) at the end of normal time and KCB can only blame themsleves for the loss since they had a comfortable lead at the end of the 3rd quarter enjoying 60 points against Co-op Bank’s 41 points. However, KCB gave the lead up in the last quarter scoring only 10 points while the defending champions played like they had been possessed by scoring spirits sinking in 29 points to force the match into extra time much to the delight of the fans.
Speaking to Michezoafrika.com Morris Shitshama the KCB tactician was disappointed with the loss but insists his side has moved forward, “In the last quarter the boys lost concentration in defence and Co-op took advantage of that. It is disappointing but we have to move on. This is our first loss and we have to make sure we don’t lose again.”
KCB had an unbeaten run of 15 matches but are still on top of the table standings with 31 points despite the loss. Co-op Bank are in 2nd place with 28 points after 17 matches.
In the first quarter, the two teams were neck to neck on 17-16 in favor of KCB. Co-op Bank flopped in the 2nd quarter where they got 9 points while their opponents got 24 to put the half time scores at 41-26.
Coming to the match on an unbeaten form, KCB were resilient to maintain their lead and in the 3rd quarter dominated once more sinking in 19 points while Co-op Bank came close with 16.
Ancent Wafula who has been in superb form for KCB was the match top scorer with 20 points closely followed by his team mates Chiza Aristote and Tobias Onyango each scoring 16 points. Co-op Bank’s Cliff Ochieng was in a class of his own frequently terrorizing KCB, he managed 19 points. James Mwangi who can be placed as one of the best defensive players in the league was it again denying KCB’s offence with 2 direct blocks.
