Coast based National Youth Talent Academy center Shimba Hills on Saturday afternoon beat visiting Gladiators 55-34 in a women KBF premier League match hosted at the KPA Hall in Makande.Shimba however recovered from a first quarter 07-09 loss to win all the remaining quarters 12-04, 20-09 and 16-12.
Gladiators’ coach George Namake blamed poor decisions by the match officials who he says called unnecessary miscellaneous fouls on his players. This he says took their mind off the game.
“We had the first quarter well in our control. But the officiating was inconsistent. Two quick fouls were called on two of our key post players and this affected our style. This weakened our strength.” He said.
From the second quarter, Shimba took a constant rise in performance posting a second quarter win of 12-04 to lead the visitors 19-13 by Half time. The third quarter was the best performance for Shimba performing well on fast breaks and defense with Mayrine Andalia leading the Hills’ attack.
“After the fouls on our key players Redempta Ogada and captain Dottie Otieno in the third quarter, we dropped in performance and the girls started concentrating more in defense. This affected the way we played. The weather in Mombasa is cool not as hot as the past experience and we cannot say the weather played role to our loss.” Namake added.
Gladiators who travelled to Mombasa with only 8 players will next face hosts KPA at the same Makande Hall on Sunday
