UGANDA : UCU Canons face Falcons in belated Lugogo return

mer UCU players Geoff Omondi and Steven Mwesigye did the damage in the first round with 12 and 10 points respectively against the hand that once fed them.
Three weeks after the attempted return to the Lugogo Indoor Stadium was sensationally blocked, basketball is again scheduled to be played there today.
Fuba are confident, just like they were before, that there won’t be a repeat of the July 27 episode. Basketball has not been played at the venue in two years.
“After long negotiations with government and National Council Sports (NCS), we have been allowed to use Lugogo,” an elated Patrick Ogwel, the Fuba vice-president, told the media in Lugogo yesterday.
Telecom Company MTN, who paid for the renovation of the facility, had earlier directed National Council Sports (NCS) to stop Fuba from accessing it.
The dispute arose from what MTN claimed were heavy backstops which could damage the floor. New ones won’t be here until September at the earliest.
Airtel National Basketball League fixtures involving UCU Canons-Falcons and UCU Lady Canons-Magic Stormers were affected at the 11th hour.
The same fixtures will be replayed at the rebranded MTN Arena. In addition, the Fiba Africa Zone V Club Championships is penciled in for the same venue from Monday through the week.
Prior to that, record champions Falcons could extend their winning streak to nine against the team they beat 75-71 to start it back in May.
