Nigeria's D'Tigers was unable to prevent the United States basketball team from setting a new Olympic record in going down 156-73 to the Olympic champions.
The previous record had been set when Brazil beat another African team, Egypt by 158 points at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.
From the very first quarter the outcome of the Group A match had not been in doubt when Team USA comprehensively outclassed the Nigerians. And the trend continued throughout the remaining three quarters as the Americans reinforced their status as the favourites to retain the gold medal they won at the last games in Beijing
