Speaking at a press conference to herald the championship, the Managing Director, Multi Choice Nigeria the sponsor, Mr. John Ugbe who was represented by Mr. Akin Shola said the tournament will officially commence on Saturday.
He said the draws will be conducted by the technical officials of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) before the end of the week.
Speaking further, Ugbe commended D'Tigers for their qualification for the London Olympics basketball event, saying the involvement of DStv in the nation's apex basketball league contributed to the feat.
"It is heart-warming to know that our team qualified against all odds, to participate in the London 2012 Olympic Games for the first time in the history of the nation.
"I think the entire basketball community in the country deserves a resounding applause for this unique achievement. I think our contribution four years ago has contributed in a little way to the team's qualification," he said.
According to him, when SuperSport decided to partner with the NBBF it was not looking for immediate gains rather but to stimulate the development of the game which has yielded the desired result now.
He noted that when the partnership started four years ago the game was not that popular as it is in the country now, with the partnership has offered the players and coaches the opportunity to showcase their talents to the entire world through DStv station.
