UGANDA : Giant storm blows into Canon fire
Giant Stormers, with only one victory to their name, take on UCU Canons in the Fuba League tonight.
John Omondi has made his mark as a coach in basketball circles. Also an umpire, Omondi, is one of those responsible for re-organising former champions Charging Rhino. Under him, Rhino returned to the men’s Division One but he left the club mid-way through last season. Rhino were relegated at the first time of asking.
He moved to Giant Stormers, who face perennial semifinalists UCU Canons in the Fuba League at YMCA court today.
Like at Rhino, Omondi has a tough job keeping the newly-promoted side in the topflight beyond their debut season.
Besides coaching and umpiring, he is the Fuba statistician and also dons the Stormers’ strip which he did in the 72-43 rout by champions DMark Power.

Stormers have managed one victory in three, beating Rez Life 83-69. However, today’s clash against a UCU side undergoing rebuilding could be as tough as playing Power.
Last season, Omondi’s Rhino was the only team to defeat eventual losing finalists Warriors during the 18-game regular season, winning 82-68 on a slippery surface.
Stormers’ Davis Apuli, scorer of 22 points and 13 rebounds in the clash against Rez Life, will be key as UCU have only lost to Power and KIU Titans, teams with bigger and perhaps better rosters.
Coach Nicholas Natuhereza has become heavily reliant on guard Sudi Ulanga.
