TANZANIA : Thabeet to Train Juvenile Basketball Players
TANZANIA international basketball star Hasheem Thabeet will conduct a two-day U-17 youth basketball clinic to be held at the Don Bosco basketball court Upanga, Dar es Salaam, from Friday.
Coca-Cola Company, through its Sprite brand, has sponsored a two-day, which will attract at least 200 youngsters from six regions. The clinic will focus mainly on the fundamentals of basketball such as ball passing and dribbling.
Tanzania Basketball Federation (TBF) Assistant Secretary General Michael Maluwe said that participants will come from the regions of Mwanza, Mbeya, Dodoma, Kilimanjaro, Arusha, Unguja and Pemba.
"We are pleased to get yet another opportunity to train the youth whom, we believe, constitute a significant platform for basketball development in the country," said Maluwe and commended Sprite for coming forth to sponsor this event.
This is the second time that Sprite is sponsoring Hasheem Thabeet's youth basketball clinic following a similar course in 2010 that was conducted at Don Bosco and benefitted over 200 participants from Dar es Salaam and upcountry regions.
Thabeet stands out as a basketball icon for Tanzania having been the first ever Tanzanian basketball player to find his way to the NBA league which is regarded as the top basketball tournament in the world. "I feel privileged to get this chance to train aspiring juvenile basketball players.
I believe some of them will become great basketball players in future," said Thabeet who is already in Dar es Salaam for the weekend assignment. On his part, Coca-Cola Tanzania Assistant Brand Manager Warda Kimaro said:
"Sprite is extremely proud to be associated with Hasheem Thabeet clinic and we believe it will give the youth a better understanding of the basics of the game and supplement TBF's concerted efforts to develop basketball in Tanzania."
Sprite started supporting basketball in Tanzania in 2010 and has since then sponsored various activities including regional tournaments, Zone Five basketball championships, AND1 matches in 2011 and April this year. The major aim is promote the game and inspire the youth to play the game.
Apart from sponsoring basketball tournaments and clinics, Sprite has also refurnished basketball courts in Dar es Salaam, Coast, Dodoma, Mbeya, Mwanza, Arusha and Kilimanjaro.
