UGANDA : Warriors’ Gombya annihilates Miracle

Barely four months have passed since Miracle Eagles reached the MTN-Fuba League play-offs for the first time. As they await Fuba guidance to change their first name to Makerere, they have to deal with new reality – reaching the playoffs would be too far fetched, at least not now.On Sunday, the harsh reality of poor roster was laid bare in 108-51 rout by Warriors at YMCA court in the sides’ season opener. Eagles looked like relegation-bound team. “I am speechless,” Eagles’ Chief Executive Officer Brian Minge said after the game.
He had to double up as coach and hardly said anything during the game. His team has lost so many players, among them Warriors’ Norman Blick. The debutant came off the bench to score 14 points and 11 rebounds but the night belonged to Sam Gombya. The 7ft 1in centre threw down a flurry of dunks for his 25 points and 20 boards. Ivan Enabu thrilled the tiny crowd in his 16 and 10. This was an oat meal as Eagles came with seven players and still face a fight to keep guard Francis Tumusiime and Brian Ssentogo.
Omony injured
Francis Kasekende (KIU), Blick (Warriors), Edwin Kateregga and Douglas Uwizera (both Falcons) have all left while Stephen Omony is currently injured. “This game was crisis management. The only other option we had was to give a walkover. We will put our roster right before our next game on Saturday,” Minge added.
Chris Kyebambe bounced from hospital where his wife had a baby boy, Christian, to score only two points. Farouk Karoro had a team-high 14 points. In the earlier game, KCC Leopards beat A1 Challenge 57-50 in the women’s division with Flavia Oketcho contributing 14 points.
