It wasn’t the start to the MTN-Fuba League that UCU Canons had hoped for as they lost 74-65 to champions DMark Power last Friday.
They can turn the tide, albeit briefly, with victory against Ndejje University Angels at YMCA court today.
There was such a gulf between UCU and Power but the clash of the two university giants will be much closer. Ndejje started life without Cyrus Kiviri by heaping more responsibility on Geoffrey Soro and Crispin Biko.
Soro returned the favour with 26 points and 18 rebounds in the easy 81-58 victory over Rez Life. He will find it tougher against a much bigger front court that has the Kenyan trident of Martin Okwako, Desmond Owili and Robert Ogweno.
Coach Nicholas Natuhereza has taken UCU to the last two semifinals but the side is yet to reach the finals. Judgement will only come at the same stage. “I was impressed by Pippen’s progress last year as much as he hurt us,” Natuhereza said in reference to Sande Okot.
The guard, signed from Falcons two years ago, derives his nickname from Chicago Bulls and NBA legend Scottie Pippen.
It’s the support Okot will give Sudi Ulanga and newly-signed Innocent Oduor that will decide their season as their back court was very thin last season. “I expect him (Pippen) to do better this year and he knows that,” Natuhereza added.
The games scheduled for Friday, which involved Falcons facing KIU Titans and Magic Stormers against KCC Leopards, were cancelled due to the unavailability of the venue.
