Defending champions, D’Mark Power started the MTN Fuba league by defeating UCU Canons 74-65 at YMCA court on Friday evening. The champions were dominant in a performance that showed they retain the hunger to lift a crown they have won in three of the last four years.
Isaac Lugudde picked seven rebounds and 15 points while point guard Ben Komakech contributed six rebounds and 14 points. Even though Power started the game without team captain and 2011 MVP Isaac Afidra, they showed their intent early by leading the first quarter 23-13.
The university side attempted to rally in the second and third quarters but couldn’t match Power’s speed. UCU, with Kenyans Brian Make, Innocent Odour and former Power player Boniface Okello, failed to impose themselves. Okello led the university side with 17points while Sudi Ulanga contributed 16 points.
In the women’s category, defending champions UCU Lady Canons beat KIU Rangers 49-31. In the men’s second division, Sharing outlasted Bushcourt 62-56 while Kings edged Kampala University 59-53.
