umpteenth time in recent years, Falcons, Uganda’s most successful basketball club, have left it late, very late.
In the twinkle of an eye, they have moved from an average side to genuine title contenders by signing Stephen Omony, Francis Tumusiime and Geoffrey Omondi.
The trio, along with ex-Warriors and Uganda national team coach Gad Eteu, penned two-year deals.
Eteu will be an assistant to Tony Oluka. Omony and Tumusiime rejoin the side from Eagles, whereas Omondi has come from UCU Canons. “We want to take Falcons back to where it belongs,” Denis Mbidde, the club boss, told Daily Monitor.
The most eye-catching of all is Omony, who left Falcons in acrimonious fashion in 2010 over non-payment of wages. The star had penned a reported Shs72m deal with Falcons following the end of his stay at PSL Hawks (Seychelles) the year before. This is the star’s third coming as he wore the red and white strip before moving to the Island nation.
The bigger questions arise from sustainability and perhaps egos as Mbidde underlines that; “we are not jumping into the championship. The team needs time to gel.”

Eteu was an assistant with the same team back in 2007 when Oluka was still a player there whereas Omony somehow demands respect. “They have come at a low financial cost. Secondly, all these people know their mistakes and have worked together before,” Mbidde added.
Falcons still refuse to release Richard Omondi to KIU Titans and still await the return of guard Abdullahi Ramadhan (Tanzania) and forward Philip Ameny (Kenya). The interest in Julius Lutwama (Nkumba Marines) and Brian Ssentogo (Eagles) has not waned either.
