KAMPALA will be a beehive of activities next week when the city hosts the 14th edition of the East end Central Africa Inter Cities basketball championships.
According to Kampala City Council Authority's Joy Olinga who is the Inter cities event organiser, all is set for the event slated to throw off in the Ugandan capital from April 24-28. “The officials in Kampala are working round the clock for this championships, she intonated.
The tournament that was last held in Nairobi will bring together teams from the cities in hosts Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi and South Sudan. The competition will feature both men and women's teams. Last year's edition was clinched by teams from Nairobi in both categories.
Kampala is yet to name their provisional players who will lose their concerntration in a mini camp ahead of the actual championships next week. "Seeing as we have just started our local league, we'll choose the players to represent Kampala city basing on their past experience and performances in regional tournaments," noted FUBA technical official, Sunday Manano.
And of course the fact that the players on the Kampala team right now are national team players and have played for their clubs at the annual Zone V club championships several times, will be a point to fall back to.
"This will not be the first time that these players are featuring in a regional tournament so I believe that with that experience that they have acquired over the years, they can go on and perform extremely well in Kampala," added a confident Manano.
Defending champions and last year’s hosts Nairobi (men and women) teams will seek to retain the titles. Nairobi has won the last 10 editions of the event
