The basketball governing body, Federation of Uganda Basketball Association (FUBA) has confirmed that the women’s national league will have 12 clubs in one division rather than eight in the top division and six in the second.
In a press release sent to the media by FUBA’s vice president administration Patrick Ogwel, the new entrants that had requested to join the women’s national league delayed their confirmation forcing the federation to overturn the latter’s decision made earlier. Nkumba Lady Marines is the only new team in the women's division.
The much anticipated league commences today at the YMCA ground, Wandegeya with Biston Planet taking on newcomers ABaCoDe in a division 3B encounter in the morning before Kampala University faces Kings in the second encounter of the day.
In the biggest game of the day, the reigning league champions Power will take on the UCU Canons but most notably all eyes will be in forward Boniface Okello who crossed from the winners to the university side where he will be offering a masters degree of his choice on full scholarship.
Ahead of the encounter, Okello told New Vision online that he is excited about playing his former side and believes that the Canons can defeat Power if they stick to the right decisions.
The 27-year-old Okello known for his impeccable man-to-man defense believes that together with his teammates, the league trophy could find its way in a somewhat half-empty trophy cabin for the varsity side.
Of course except for a few crowns from university championships over the years and a division two title enroute to their presence in the topflight. Nothing much for the men to show off in the top division-really.
In a bid to defend their title, the UCU Lady Canons will take on their archrivals KIU Rangers but with the latter missing their dependable forward Mercy Etyang who moved to Kenya’s Cooperative Bank, this fixture could be a one-sided encounter.
However, Rangers’ coach Nimrod Kaboha has revealed that his side is a new one and will give the champions a run for their money and of course the Kansanga based side is eyeing an upset today evening.
