Record MTN-Fuba League champions Falcons overcame newly-promoted Vegetarian 68-58 at YMCA on Saturday to get their season off to a good start.
Falcons, rotating only seven players and without a substantive coach, had returnee Edwin Kateregga lead their charge with 22 points and 15 rebounds.
The centre/forward has spent the past two seasons with Makerere Eagles and was only re-signed last week as Falcons seek to win a first title since 2007 and seventh in total. With the team they fielded, that would take a miracle even if they dominated the first three quarters 15-10, 15-14 and 24-13.
No options
The gulf between the two sides in the first division, which was expanded from 10 to 12 teams, was created by the boards which the former champions swept 55-33.
Kateregga and forward Peter Elungat (12 points and 11 rebounds) had to play the entire 40 minutes due to the lack of options.
Simon Otine and Vinnie Jurua kept the newcomers interested with 12 and 10 points respectively. In the late game, Heaters subjected Nkumba Marines to a 67-50 defeat. Unlike last season when they won one game in the entire first round, coach Brian Wathum should be pleased they hit the ground running this time.
