Buru Buru who last participated in the games in 2010 will be seeking to finish top of pool B which also include Central province representative, Alliance Girls, Ulanda of Nyaza and two other teams from Eastern and North eastern provinces.
Coach Julius Otieno who has been in charge of the team since 2001 said that their target this year will be to represent the country in the East Africa games and that means they will have to first lift the national title.
The coach who took over from the current Upper Hill principal cum coach Wycliffe Obingo believes their game against Alliance having won their last two encounters.
"We only know of Alliance whom we have played twice. winning both matches but we don't know much about the other teams. We want to finish top of the table and progress to the semis, our main target this year is to participate in the East Africa Games and we must show our intention by winning the national trophy," said Otieno whose side got training kits from Brookside Dairy, the games title sponsors.
Peter Wasonga, Brookside Marketing Manager said that the sponsor will donate two pairs of training kit to each team, but giving priority to teams like Alliance that will be making a return into the games after a long term absence to encourage competition in the games.
"We gave these kits to Buru Buru as a way of encouraging the team to perform better in the national games, but we will also be donating kits to Alliance that has been out of these games for a long time so that we can inculcate the culture of competition in the sport," Wasonga said at Buru Buru Girls where presented the kits worth Ksh 80,000 to the team captain, Brenda Nawiri.
Buru Buru will rely heavy on the services of Irene Achieng who will be joining Boston based Harvard University in 2014 on a sports scholarship, Ashley Ngatia and captain Brenda who are also expected to join different colleges in the USA on scholarship when they land at Maseno.
Buru Buru won the basketball title in 1996 under coach Wycliffe Obingo who also lifted the same cup in 2001.
