Shimba Hills struck a treble at the weekend, winning the boys’ and girls’ basketball and the boys’ hockey titles as the Kwale District Secondary Schools Term One Games concluded at Matuga Girls.
The victors were buoyed by their good performance in the latest Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examinations where one of their own emerged among the top students in Coast.
In addition, last year’s shooting guard, Lucy Michelle, attained university entry points.
Shimba Hills whose girls’ basketball and netball teams, who have a full sponsorship from Unicef, were simply in a class of their own.The girls basketball team beat all their opponents with over century marks to emerge tops in matches played on a round robin basis, sending a clear message that they are out to reclaim the title at next month’s nationals in Kisumu.
They beat Lukore Secondary 116-00, Matuga Girls 100-07 and Waa Girls Secondary 105-6 in this championships which attracted four girls’ teams.
Greatly motivated by academics
“The players have been greatly motivated by the school’s marked improvement in the academics mean grade, and more so the good work done in class by their colleagues who graduated last year, and have vowed to ensure the same is realised on the pitch this time round,” said an elated principal Robert Aran, who has predicted the same performance at the provincial championships.
Matuga Girls finished second after beating rivals Waa Girls 30-07 in a balanced encounter.
Shimba Hills also won the boys’ basketball title after beating Lukore Secondary 66-31 in the decisive match after winning all their matches comfortably.
They had earlier beaten Kwale High 75-16, and Waa boys 65-09 while Lukore came second with a 35-24 win over Waa Boys.
