UCU beat KCC 68-57 to clinch the seven-match series 4-0 at YMCA court on Saturday night. A more incident-filled game saw Power win a third successive game, beating Warriors 77-70 yesterday. Umpires had walked off with less than a minute to play with Power leading 70-69 after a fan struck one of the officials with a missile. The hooligan seemed to contest a clear call when Power’s Jimmy Enabu fouled his brother Ivan Enabu.
The latter had the chance to put Warriors ahead. The break seemed to have killed Warriors’ ascendancy when the umpires did return. Ivan missed his free throws.
Power also did edge Game Four 78-77 on Saturday night when Warriors’ Jude Ochen missed a three-point attempt at the buzzer and his team is now in big trouble. Game Five is on Wednesday night.
For a second successive season, UCU made the finals anti-climatic. Maureen Amoding, the MVP from last season when the university side swept A1 Challenge, scored 24 points and Purity Odhiambo added 15 points and 17 rebounds. “I am a little surprised we won 4-0,” UCU sports tutor and women’s coach Dale Sculy said.
On the whole, the series was hugely one-sided and disappointing. Questions are bound to arise about the quality of competition in women’s basketball. Are UCU this good or were KCC that bad? “I don’t think we have better players than KCC but as a team, the girls played exceptionally well and it all came together at the right time,” Sculy added. “It was a team effort and not about one trying to be a star.”
