KENYA : Africa title next .
NEWLY crowned national women champions Eagle Wings are now eyeing a continental title after a successful year at the local front. Head coach Thomas Olumbo said Africa was their next focus his girls dethroned Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) 82-65 in decisive Game Three at Nyayo Stadium gymnasium. He said they are as good as any other team in the continent but their problem in the last two years has been the inability to secure a sponsor to take care of their financial needs. “We will be going out early next year to look for a sponsor. We will be talking to people asking them to even sponsor our air fare only while we take care of the rest. This way, I think we will get somewhere,” he said.
The long serving Olumbo, who has also handled the national women’s side, said the team prepared well after losing Game 53-46 to KPA in Mombasa. “I am happy the way my girls responded in the last two games to take the crown. After we lost the opening series tie in Mombasa, we had a lot of time to train together and this is one reason why we were unstoppable,” he said.
Agina Wesonga, the asistant team manager repeated Olumbo’s sentiments, saying they will go the extra mile not to disappoint the players once again after failing to travel to Dar es Salaam at the last minute. “We missed the zonal tournament in Tanzania this year due to finances after training so hard for the event,” he said, adding: “But I can assure you next year we will enter the team for the show.

Ojukwu is not helping us and the game grow.
As the chairman of the technical committee, I have heard complains about him and I am seeing this for the first time. I am not happy.” Shihemi told the team head of delegation. He said there must be change of attitude at the KPA technical bench if this team is to go far. He said the guests snubbed by KPA had brought in Sh150,000 as awards to the top teams. “Ojukwu even refused to have a team doctor attend to an injured player onto the court and besides called one of my match officials names while he had made the call as per the rules.” he said.
