KENYA : KPA through to Africa Club ball Championship .
KENYA Ports Authority over the weekend booked a ticket to the Africa club championships when they re-captured the Fiba Africa Zone Five women’s crown by beating Berco Stars of Burundi 57-42 in the final at the National Stadium, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. But the reigning men’s champions Co-operative Bank of Kenya surrendered the title they won in Bujumbura last year when they fell 69-61 to Urunani of Burundi. Both teams had earlier played in the preliminary round matches where Co-op Bank prevailed 56-49.
The dock women who had gone into this final with two loses, one against the same Burundians did their home work well to book a ticket to the continental club tournament slated for later this year. KPA controlled the game straight from the tip off taking a close 10-9 first quarter lead. They were ahead 13-10 in the second quarter.
After the break, KPA raked in baskets to take a 19-11 cushion before icing the cake in the fourth with a 15-12 score. Veteran Joyce Makungu bagged 12 points while defensive ace Hellen Okoth collected 10 for the new champions. Berco were lifted by Inas Nezerwa who posted 12 and Kalume Sifa who scored 11. The new champions had lost 41-40 to the Burundians in an earlier tie.
