KENYA : KPA girls through to Zone Five semi-finals .

KENYA Ports Authority whipped Jeshi Stars of Tanzania in their Fiba Africa Zone Five championships quarter-final in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania to make it to the semi finals. The dockers, who had lost two matches in a row, recovered brilliantly to make the semis as the fourth women’s team.

In the men’s semis, reigning champions Co-operative Bank of Kenya topped pool “B” with a clean run and were to take on compatriots KCB Lions who finished second in pool “A”. The matches were set for yesterday. KPA went into this make or break tie, knowing it was win or nothing. They quickly grabbed the lead, taking a 16-3 first quarter edge and never looked back. In the second quarter, they trailed 9-10 in the second. Both teams tied 15-15 in the third before they victors sailed away 23-7 in the last.
KPA finished their matches in fourth place and were to take on Jeshi again in the semis due yesterday. Second placed Kampala City Council (KCC) faced Berco Stars of Burundi while Ethiopia’s side Government House were eliminated. The other men’s semis will see APR of Rwanda, who topped pool “A”, play Burundi’s Urunani who were second in pool “B”. The matches arer expected to be exlplosive. It was a blow for host Tanzania as all their three teams in the week long tournament were eliminated. KCB Lions thumped Vijana of Tanzania 83-43 in their last tie.
Lions roared to a 26-13 first quarter, hung up 12-15 in the second, continued the charge with a 16-6 run in the third and completed the rout with a strong 25-14 advantage in the last. In other matches, Ethiopia Sports lost 33-67 to Urunani and KBC of Rwanda hit Army Club of Tanzania 81-65 while APR shut out Savio of Tanzania 63-34. KCC went down to home girls Jeshi Stars 60-64 while Urunani managed to pip ABC 53-57.
