KENYA : Basketball playoffs to kick off this weekend

The KBF Premier League playoffs are set to kick off this weekend with Strathmore Blades booking an appointment with Ulinzi Warriors in the first match to be played this weekend. The game is set to be a baptism of fire for both teams as none is willing to relent on their quest for the title this season, any result short of a victory will be unacceptable for either although both are in consonance with one reality; in basketball there are never ties, one team must win.
Both teams have snatched a win from the other this season with Blades’ win being the most memorable when David Ogolla buried a last second three point shot to force a 62-63 win for the varsity students. The soldiers won the second leg of their regular season meeting at 66-62.
“We know there is only one result after the two legs, you are either in or out of the title search. Strathmore is a good side but we will use our experience to ensure we get back the title this season.” Said Ulinzi coach Eliud Nzioka.
Playoffs are ‘two-legged’ ties normally played on a ‘home and away’ basis where even basket difference counts and with this in the minds of both teams, fans should expect a charged game with the students hoping for a repeat of their Friday Basketball Night triumph over the soldiers while soldiers are having their eyes fixed on the crown that they once used to rule.
Warriors’ assault will be led by Bernard Mufutu, Kenyan internationals Victor Odendo and Ancette Wafula while Blades will rely on the speed of Tonny Abondo and the power of Ronald Gundo to make a meal of the battle-hardened soldiers whose defense has always proved a hard nut to crack for most teams this season.
