UGANDA : Eagles await Zone5 decision

The fate of Uganda fielding a third men’s team in the regional Zone V Club Basketball Championships in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania next month, lies in the hands of organisers.

Miracle Eagles have already written to the local body, Fuba, intimating their willingness to participate in the annual event but competitions committee head Sande Manano said it’s out of his hands. “Usually, we are allowed two teams for each of the men’s and women’s competitions so we requested the Zone to allow us an extra team. We shall get feedback and inform the teams tomorrow (today),” Manano said yesterday.
At the previous event in Burundi last year, Fuba successfully sought an extra slot which Miracle, having finished fifth, took along with the then champions Kyambogo Warriors and third-placed UCU Canons.
DMark Power, runners-up in the 2009 league, and the fourth-placed 7UP Falcons skipped the Burundi event, handing the bonus position to Miracle. This time, champions Power and losing finalists Warriors will be entered though none has officially communicated to Fuba despite both teams telling this newspaper that they will definitely travel.
Alongside the two, Miracle come in as a fifth option after the other two UCU Canons and Falcons fail to register due to the rule which allows only two foreigners yet they mainly have players from the region. In the women’s half, champions UCU Lady Canons and A1 Challenge are granted the slots. The former’s hopes of participation hang by the thread. “Initially, we had planned not to travel because the trip is long and costly.
So we sought sponsorship which doesn’t look positive now,” Dale Sculy, the UCU sports tutor said. “Do you anywhere I can find Shs40m right now? This being a university we can only travel by air in order to fit into the academic schedule,” he added. KCC and KIU are likely to take UCU’s slot.
