UGANDA : Falcons vow to make play-offs
Falcons will not give up the fight for a play-offs slot in the topflight MTN-Fuba League. The record champions are joint sixth with 11 points on the 10-team table and can be relegated after the Fuba technical committee docked them three points for fielding an illegal player.
Falcons used Kenyan Phillip Alweny against Charging Rhino and Warriors. They will now lose the return fixtures against the two sides by forfeiture as Fuba insist the Kenyan had not been cleared to play by his former side Posta.
“We can win all our second round games,” Falcons star guard Abdullahi Ramadhan said after they rallied to defeat champions Power 79-68 on Sunday night.
That’s exactly what Falcons need to do to avoid missing the postseason for the very first time. “We cannot fail to make the play-offs,” Ramadhan vowed. But before they start the tough journey to the play-offs, Falcons have a boardroom battle on their hands.
The Fuba technical committee has summoned club chairman Denis Mbidde over media utterances they claim he made following the points deduction.
“We had consultations and agreed that Mbidde should come and defend himself since he has presented his case to you (media) mostly and not us,” Musaazi said yesterday. Mbidde, though, maintained his stand saying Fuba are against his club. “They (Fuba technocrats) cannot defeat us on the floor. We shall go the distance with this case. This is unfair,” Mbidde said. If the penalty is upheld upon an appeal hearing next week, Falcons should be pre-occupied with fighting relegation rather than pursuing a play-off appearance.
Falcons (4-5) must fight to dislodge Ndejje Angels (4-5), who occupy fifth place and fourth-placed UCU Canons (5-3), to squeeze into the post-season. Table leaders Warriors (8-1), Miracle Eagles and Power ( both tied on 7-2) look poised to take the top three slots.
