UCU Canons have grown in stature over the past five years but there is one team in the MTN-Fuba League whose number they are yet to find – Mountain Dew Falcons. Today at YMCA court, Wandegeya, UCU face the six-time champions with probably their best chance to get the monkey off their back and also make an early play-off statement. The former, barring Tuesday’s 74-79 loss to Miracle Eagles, are playing their best basketball since they went through the regular season unbeaten in 2007. Back then, UCU lost to Falcons in the play-off semi-final and have also accounted for the former’s only other defeat this season.

“I think we have improved as a team and everyone understands that the unit is more important that the individual,” UCU guard Ivan Enabu said. Size, where Falcons have an edge, could be as important as quick transitions epitomized by the university side. Mike Buzangu and Richard Osano Omondi are expected to return after a one-match break to take the burden off Sudi Ulanga, Cedric Sinarinzi and Bienvenue Ngandu.

In the women’s, title hopefuls, UCU Lady Canons and A-1 Challenge clash in a potential cracker as the former seek to avenge the first round loss. On Wednesday night, Kyambogo Warriors got rid of some of their recent pain with an easy 70-44 victory over free-falling KIU Titans. The champions were cruising with Michael Kariuki (13), Martin Okwako (12), Ronnie Kasewu (12) and man-of-the-match Abdullahi Ramdhan (12) all reaching double figures. Elsewhere, Nanyonga Florence (21) and Judith Nasobya (20) helped KIU Rangers ease to a 69-37 win over Amazon Rhino.
