MALAWI : Basketball giants battle in Unima tourney
Southern Zone Basketball League (Sozobal) champions Magang'a, Falcons, Poly Bobcats and Chanco Hawks will represent the zone during the event while Central Zone Basketball League (Cezobal) leaders Blazers alongside Trojans have also been included in the tournament.
The reunion tournament has been organised by Unima students union entertainment committee in conjunction with Nde'feyo Entertainment.
The Entertainment firm's spokesperson Mphatso Chauluka said they want alumni to give back to the University and the surrounding communities.
“They can willingly offer support through a forum like this one,” he said.
Chauluka said they decided to highlight basketball teams because Unima has produced great basketball players.
“Unima is the best source of basketball players ever produced in the country. For a long time, Poly Bobcats and Chanco Hawks used to dominate basketball in the country. Therefore, we want to rekindle the fire,” he said.
Chauluka said the Unima reunion will also involve other sporting disciplines such as volleyball, pool, bawo, darts and chess.
Meanwhile, Chauluka also disclosed that they had secured sponsorship for the basketball tournament from Ambokile Salimu.
“The sponsorship will cover for prizes, medals and miniatures,” he said.
