Julius Lutwama’s suspected broken finger left the crowd at YMCA court, Wandegeya on Friday night in shock and awe as his Nkumba Marines succumbed 70-79 to UCU Canons in the MTN-Fuba League men’s division I.
Only two minutes into the first quarter, Lutwama was taken off with cloth soaked in blood around his finger. Even without their talisman guard, Marines fought gallantly but still fell short as UCU won three on the trot.
Marines’ Philip Wakimwero scored a game-high 25 points but they paid the price for long quiet periods especially the second and third quarters where they trailed 18-27 and 11-22 respectively. Geoffrey Omondi (22) and Steven Mwesigye (10) led all-round team display.
Later in day, champions Warriors’ labouring start to the season continued with a 56-44 victory over KIU Titans. Markmot Orom sunk 28 points against his former side to carry Warriors over the rope. UCU’s Lady Canons beat Makerere Sparks 112-56.
