UGANDA : Warriors plot an opener surprise

THE Kyambogo Warriors hope to surprise D’Mark Power with two “big signings” when the two sides meet today in a thrilling men’s division one season-opener at Wandegeya.
The men’s MTN-FUBA League defending champions are said to have spent yesterday in transfer talks with two unnamed players. Club boss Ambrose Tashobya promised that the pair would be unleashed today if the moves are completed.
Tashobya would not reveal the identity of the players, whom he described as big signings. He argued it would jeopardise the talks.
“We don’t want their clubs to know about the discussions because they might stop them,” said Tashobya, who is also the president of sport governing body FUBA.
However, that argument does not wash because ultimately the club would not be talking to the players if they were ineligible for a transfer. Therefore, Tashobya’s act of silence is a tactic aimed at surprising Power.
The Warriors will be without last year’s mega signings Martin Okwako and Abdullah Ramadan, who are attending to family issues. But Gad Eteu’s team will have no shortage of firepower because they have also signed Pascal Oule and the Malinga brothers (Henry and Eric).
Power coach Bernice Nkunda believes this is a game that they have to win to make a statement.
“Winning this game is import ant because it will act as a benchmark of what we want to achieve this season,” Nkunda said, before vowing that his troops will seal the victory in the second half.
r The Mountain Dew Falcons, who start their 2010 season on Sunday, will unveil all their new signings at Makerere sports grounds tomorrow.
Club marketing chief Dennis Mbidde said seven players will be introduced to the public, addind that most of the new acquisitions are unknown. They come from Tanzania, Rwanda and Congo.
