UGANDA : Kampala University to play in Fuba league
The number of teams in the MTN-Fuba League is set to increase after Kampala University confirmed they would be fielding at least one team this season.
The ever-expanding league now has three men’s divisions and one for women.
In total, there are 38 teams, with 11 of them playing in the women’s division. “We are planning to field one men’s team and another in the women’s category,” Kampala University official Ronald Kamoga said recently.
Kampala University won football and handball at last month’s inter-university games held at Nkumba but couldn’t contend for the overall trophy because of their failure to field teams in sports disciplines like basketball and other indoor games.
“Since we have consolidated our position in football, our next target is now basketball. There is no way we can compete with other universities, which play in the league,” Kamoga said.
Uganda Christian University (UCU) Mukono, Kampala International University (KIU) and Ndejje all have teams in the league.
Being new entrants, however, Kampala University men’s team will have to start in Third Division, the lowest tier in the league.
Third Division has only seven teams while the topflight and Second Division have 10 teams each. The league begins in March.
