KENYA : KPA weather storms

By Erick Ochieng’

League champions Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) returned with a bang to women’s Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) Premier League by defeating Sprite Storms 48-26 in a match played at Coca Cola Stadium Gymnasium yesterday.

Men’s defending champions Kenya Commercial Bank were also in a 91-62 win over Lomboritz to start the season in style.

KBF fixtures secretary, Joseph Amoko, said the men’s Premier League match pitting Yana and Kenya College of Accountancy University (KCA-U), which was to be the day’s opener, was rescheduled due to logistical problems.
"There were a few hitches and so we postponed the match to give the teams room to organise a few things," Amoko said.

Madison walloped Nairobi Deaf Kings 67-17 (17-04,19-06,12-03,19-04) in the men’s Nairobi Basketball Association (NBA) league, which is in its third leg.
Hope Centre, who played their second match of the NBA, were not left out in the winning spree as they edged out Kenya Polytechnic University 33-30 (04-07,13-08,11-09,05-06) in the women’s category.

Game-High 14 Points

Yvonne Kathue of Kenya Polytechnic University scored a game-high 14 points as Madison’s Brian Shivachi raked in 13 in the match against Deaf Kings. Calvin Musalia managed seven points for the Deaf Kings. Tobias Onyango, who scored a game-high of 27 points, and Luka Lukogo (14) led KCB Lions to win 23-11, 13-18, 27-13 and 28-20 against Lomboritz, who won their first match 60-61 against Strathmore University last weekend.

Women’s basketball powerhouse KPA were too good for Storms as they won all the quarters comfortably, thanks to their in-form guard Yvonne Akinyi.

Not Substituted

The towering Akinyi, who was not substituted by coach Anthony Ojukwu for the entire two hour-period, scored 13 points as team mate Everlyn Akoth scored eight.

Yvonne Mashedi and Angela Luchivya gave Storms seven and six points in the encounter. The first quarter was a closely contested affair as KPA won 12-09, but both teams managed to up their scores through fouls awarded in the second quarter.

At point, coaches from both sides paced on the sidelines, issuing instructions in what saw KPA 13-09 ahead before the break.

Aggressiveness marked the third quarter as the hosts piled pressure but poor finishing cost them the quarter as KPA backliners enjoyed height advantage over their opponents.

KPA capitalised on good runs made by Akinyi in the right wing to win the third quarter 18-04 and 06-04 in the fourth. Premier League action resumes next weekend.
