By Erick Ochieng’
New comers Eastern Queens triumphed 70-51 over United States International University of Africa (Usiu-A) in the women’s national Premier League basketball match played at Coca Cola National Stadium Gymnasium, Nairobi, yesterday.
World Hope beat Nakuru Club 69-67 to start their men’s Division One campaign on a winning note. Maurice Obilo and Robert Kirui scored 24 and 10 points for World Hope as Daniel Opiyo (16 points) and Michael Akum (14) helped Nakuru reduce the gap.
Debutants Eastern Queens, who won the all the four quarters 18-10,19-13,12-09 and 14-20, are a new force to reckon with in the league.
"We are still rusty and the best is yet to come," said Queens’ coach Abel Nelson.
In-form Linda Alando netted 23 points while team mate Irene Makori scored 11 for Queens victory. Barbara Githinji (13 points) and Everlyn Nora (eight) were outstanding for Usiu-A. Queens’ line up had former Sprites Storms’ players.
Maureen Andalia opened the game for the victors with a two-pointer before Linda Sirma replied for Usiu-A a minute later to make the match a see-saw affair. Usiu-A’s Alando and Samba Mjomba had a skilful display.
Both sides suffered temporary setback in the last quarter when Queen’s Hilda Indasi (thigh injury) and Usiu-A’s Quinter Ramogi (muscle pull) left the game to be attended to.
The varsity side scored five three-pointers of which Everlyn Nora and Mjomba scored a double each, while Queens had three from Mitchel Otinda (a double) and Indasi.
