TANZANIA : Kampala thrash Mogadishu in basketball

The regional Inter-Cities basketball tournament started with bang in Arusha today, as Kampala flattened Mogadishu by 83-35 points. Kampala were unstoppable from the word go as they proved too strong for Mogadishu at the Sheikh Amri Abeid Memorial Stadium.

Kampala top scorers were Jeff Omondi, who netted 22points, while John Okalla managed 15 points. Mogadishu notable scorers were Mohammed Ally (13) and Adam Omar Ally (12). In another match Mombasa whitewashed Tanga 97-50.

Mombasa’s Danny Okwiri, Zadak Odhiambo and Mussa Oduor were unstoppable, as they were scoring points almost at will. Cities that are competing in the event are Harare, Mogadishu, Tanga, Kampala, Nairobi, Mombasa and hosts Arusha.

Fifteen city teams had earlier expressed interest to take part in the tournament, but others have failed due to various reasons including financial difficulties. He named some of the cities that pulled out at the eleventh hour as Mbeya, Mwanza, Kigali and Bujumbura. Dar es Salaam are the defending champions in the Men’s category. Dar women team finished second behind Kampala City, who won the 2008 championship in Dar es Salaam.
