Kampala City Council (KCC) Leopards got a confidence boost ahead of next week’s Africa Zone 5 Clubs Championship in Ethiopia, outlasting A-1 Challenge 57-55 in an MTN-Fuba League game played Friday night at Lugogo Indoor stadium.
Coming off a loss to Uganda Christian University (UCU) Lady Canons, the defending champions needed a perfect recovery and showed maturity on Friday enroute to ending A-1 Challenge’s 17-match unbeaten run.
Leopards took the initiative, winning the first quarter 13-12 but A-1 Challenge hit back to take a two-point lead (28-26) into recess and looked set to avenge their first round (47-44) loss. But a composed Leopards side led by Miriam Hamala (19 points) leveled the game at 40-all in the subsequent session and sealed victory in the last quarter 17-15.
The towering Annette Nakiwu got 13 points to her name while reigning Most Valuable Player (MVP) Linda Tamale added eight for KCC Leopards, who will now depart for Addis Ababa on Tuesday in a buoyant mood.
Winless in five
A-1 Challenge have now failed to beat KCC in five meetings, having surrendered a 2-0 lead to lose last season’s best of five final series to the same team.
After they were docked four points by the technical committee because of reporting late for the game against UCU a few weeks ago, the loss also means A-1 Challenge (29 points) could finish third in the regular season and face KCC (35) again in the play-offs.
Elizabeth Kiiza led A-1 Challenge with 13 points, Betty Namukasa and Ali Mavita had eight apiece while Rosette Meya added seven.
