NIGERIA : Union Bank, Pillars push for top spots

Kano (Premier League playoff) - Union Bank of Lagos and Kano Pillars were the early qualifiers for the semi final stage of the 2008 Nigerian Premier Basketball League playoff holding at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano. And both teams are hoping to scale the semi finals hurdles today and battle for the trophy when the final match holds Saturday.

On Thursday, the Bankers recovered from their shock fall to AHIP Giants on Wednesday to defeat fellow Atlantic Conference team Lagos Islanders by 68-49. In another all conference battle, and this time the Savannah, Kano Pillars defeated Plateau Peaks 84-78. It was a second straight win for the Pillars who defeated Customs in the last game of Wednesday played late into the night. “For the game against AHIP we lost; we simply lost. But we’ve qualified already for the semi final stage irrespective of that result now,” Rotimi Savage of Union Bank told FIBA.COM from the sidecourt in Kano.

Union Bank, Niger Potters, Pillars and Plateau Peaks look good to pick the two continental tickets at stake. The champions and runners up will represent Nigeria in the FIBA Africa Men’s Club Championship holding in Tunisia by December. But before that stage, the Nigerian teams will first pass through the FIBA Africa Zone 3 qualifiers likely to be staged in Lagos next month.
