UGANDA : FUBA Hit By Cash Crisis
by Sande Bashaija
The financial status of the Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations (Fuba) is very worrying. So worrying that the federation failed to raise Shs400,000 to send officials to handle a league game involving men's champions Falcons and home side Gulu Hawks on Saturday.
"Our sponsors (MTN) are yet to give us money, so we are basically depending on gate collections to run the league," Fuba assistant general secretary Joseph Manano revealed to Daily Monitor yesterday. "The sponsors have promised to bail us out very soon and hopefully everything will be fine."
In the past, games in Gulu have been cancelled due to failure by visiting teams to make the trip but the Saturday incident is captivating. Falcons were very furious Fuba had not informed them on time about the development. "We had already boarded on our way to Gulu only to be told the game had been cancelled," Falcons senior player Walter Alenyo said..
Fuba had also promised to renovate and upgrade YMCA basketball court but nothing has been done on the surface due to the financial crisis. League games are now played at Namboole, a venue that is evidently biting on clubs' wallets because it is out of town.
Meanwhile in the games played Saturday, Makerere Cubs produced the biggest upset in the league, beating six-time champions Lady Bucks 51-32. Two-time men champions Marines were lucky to defeat Crane High 69-63.
