by Malyo Njedengwa

American basketball duo of Jennifer Azzi and Matt Bonner started well clinics for Dar es Salaam students yesterday.

The first clinic, conducted at the Don Bosco basketball ground was witnessed by a huge crowd of young players.
The director of international basketball operations from NBA Brook Meek and vice-president and a community relations official Todd Jacobson were also involved in the clinic.
Young players were shown how to pass, dribble and maintain possession of the ball while playing, a move greeted by a tremendous response.
The NBA delegates said the clinic's opening day was superb and highly inspired many basketball youths.
"We have been impressed by not only the turn-up of players but also the way they grasped the training and great interest shown," said Azzi.
Azzi said she had noted some players who have a remarkable potentials in basketball. They could possibly turn professional should they maintain their playing tempo, she noted.
The NBA delegates also taught some rules of the game apart from playing and handling the ball.
They advised young players to play with determination, team work, practice and stay away from drug abuse and alcohol.
The visit by the NBA delegates is funded by the American people and a US Government-funded NGO called Family Health International Ujamaa Project. The Tanzania Basketball Federation (TBF) is coordinating the clinics.
