by Sande Bashaija

Lubiri 40-34 Bugema
Budo 50-12 Ssaku
Maryhill 91-06 Kigezi
Muntuyera 33-69 Bugema
Eagles 110-29 Kigezi

Hosts Kigezi High School (girls and boys) have been turned into punching bags in the ongoing Sprite Basketball League. Despite playing before the home crowd and showing desire for victory, Kigezi were blanked 91-06 by Mbarara’s Maryhill High School girls, a game that assured the later of a slot in the semifinals due later today.
Bridget Natukunda, who is being tipped to take the Most Valuable Player’s (MVP) award, scored 27 points and Patience Ankunda added 30 as Maryhill reduced the Kigezi team and their fans to tears, Tuesday evening on a soggy surface following an afternoon down power that interrupted play.
Ronah Nabimanya got four of the six points for the hosts in first quarter and the Kigezi fans celebrated all the baskets like is the norm after scoring in a soccer match.
For the proceeding two quarters, Kigezi never got the ball inside the ring and only sunk in two in the final session to end a miserable evening for the hosts. Maryhill, eliminated at the semifinal stage last year, are likely to take on Budo, who also made easy work of Ssaku from Wobulenzi 50-12.
“The team has improved a lot and we have our eyes on the title,” Maryhill coach Denis Katungi stated. Kigezi boys were meanwhile thrashed 110-29 by last year’s losing finalists Eagles Nest Secondary School in a game that later confirmed that no boy’s team from western Uganda, would progress to the penultimate stage.
Kigezi’s demise came shortly after another western region team-Muntuyera High School from Ntungamo had been beaten 69-33 by Bugema Adventist from Wakiso District. The race for the boy’s title is now left between Ssaku, St. Michael, Bugema and Eagles Nest.
