NIGERIA : Premier Basketball - Union Bank, Customs Win
by Pius Ayinor
Lagos
Sunday was a full day of men's basketball in Lagos as three Premier League matches were played at the National Stadium. The men's event is on the heels of the female Zenith Bank League that meant at least five matches a day in Lagos for 10 days ending late Saturday.
In the very first match of the day Customs rekindled their fight for a play off spot with a 52-49 win over Ebun Comets. While it was a good run for the uniformed men, it marked another rough day on the court for the Comets who lost four straight games in all competitions with the fall to the Customs.
"Our players did very well but I am also surprise at the performance of the Comets team. It is not exactly the Comets we used to know. We had serious foul problems and had to play the last quarter with our bench and still had our ground," Mohammed Jagu Abba, the Customs assistant coach told THISDAYSports.
In the second match of the day Lagos Islanders defeated Delta Force 55-29. The match marked series of losses for the Asaba-based team just as they have lost out completely from the race to the play off.
The star match of the day was the last game between Union Bank and Dodan Warriors. The match, which began at about 6 pm, played at a clutch until the very last three minutes when the Union Bank team built up a nine-point gap and the lead saw them through to the buzzer.
The match was two straight wins for the Stallion Boys who also won their match on Saturday against visiting Yelwa Hawks from Bauchi State. The Hawks were on their Road Trip through the Atlantic Conference which they rounded off by the weekend.
The Hawks defeated Comets on Friday and that turned out as their only win of the tour having lost the other five matches.
