The Oyo State female team outclassed their Ogun State counterparts at the Western conference finals winning by 25 – 9 points to book a place at the national finals of the 10th Nestle Milo Secondary Schools' Basketball Championship scheduled to hold in Lagos in October this year.
However, the boys' final of the Western conference, which was played under protest, was keenly contested. Osun State won the final by 39 -37 points against Lagos State.
The Yejide Girls Grammar School Ibadan team, who were the defending champions, made a mincemeat of the Ogun State girls from Sango Otta High School, Ijoko-Ota and it was indeed a mismatch as the weeping Ogun girls posed little resistance to the winners.
Boys' winners, St. Marks Commercial High School, Osogbo, were suspected to have fielded mercenaries against their opponents, International School, Lagos.
Lagos State played the final under protest and the organisers are still investigating the incidence. Osun State could be disqualified if the allegations are proved right.
Coordinator of the tournament, Col. Sam Ahmedu (Rtd.) said that the Lagos finals would witness fireworks as the finalists from the conferences had displayed very high standards.
The conference finals began in Kano with the Savanna conference, followed by the Sahara and Central conferences in Bauchi and Ilorin.
The train moved down south to the Equatorial conference in Enugu, the Atlantic conference in Asaba before moving finally to the Western conference just concluded in Ibadan.
