CAP VERDE : National Senior Mens' Preparation

Cape Verdes senior mens basketball pre-selection began preparations last week, June 16, for the qualification tournament for the 2008 Olympic Games. Among those called upon to play for the national basketball team are six important reinforcements, among them Peter Cipriano (206-F-83, college: Southern), a 2.06-meter, 130-kilogram
giant who plays in Finland's Professional Basketball League, Josh Gomes (190-G-83, college: E.Illinois), who plays in Israel, and Jeff Xavier (185-G-85, college: Manhattan), who plays college basketball for the University of Providence in the United States.

Marito (Desportivo, Cabinda, Angola), Rodrigo Mascarenhas and Marques Houtman (1 de Agosto, Angola), Vini and Tony Barros (USA) and Abdulay Faty (Desportivo, Huila, Angola) are the returners from the lineup that won Cape Verde the bronze medal in Afrobasket 2007 in Angola.
Ivan Almeida (from Stonehill College) and Fidel, who plays in Portugal, are two new promises who have just joined the national basketball selection. Mário Jorge will not be present, as the date coincides with his wedding.

The coaching team also has a number of new faces: Kula, the only level III coach working in Cape Verde. And Rico, who was Emanuel Trovoadas assistan during Afrobasket 2007 in Angola.
Meanwhile, the Cape Verdean Basketball Federation continues to look for financing for Cape Verde to participate in the qualification tournament, which will take place in Athens, Greece in July. So far, the Federation has managed to raise 16 million of the 30 million escudos in its budget.
