TOP guns parade at the Menengai High School, Nakuru, this morning for the annual Labour Day Open basketball tournament.
Defending champions Kenya Commercial Bank Lions and Sprite Storms lead teams from Nairobi that will battle for honours in the event that starts at 9am. The other venue will be Nakuru High School.
Others team are Co-operative Bank of Kenya, University of Nairobi (UoN) Terrorists, International Christian Centre, Strathmore University, Eagle Wings, Sprite Storms, Yana Ladies, UoN Dynamites, United States International University, Posta, Blazers, Lomboritz, Nairobi Pentecostal Church and Mennonites.
Meanwhile, Makande Welfare gymnasium, Mombasa, will host the first Premier League matches this season on May 10, officials have said.
The revised fixtures released yesterday by Kenya Basketball Federation Fixtures Secretary, Joseph Amoko, indicated that Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) would host Nairobi-based Strathmore University men and women’s teams.
It will be the first outing for the women’s champions, KPA, who will use the matches to introduce new signings. KPA will represent the country in the Zone Five qualifiers.
Strathmore sides have tasted action this season, posting mixed results in the two-week league. The students are aware of the task ahead in Mombasa where KPA teams are a hard nut to crack and have been training hard for the coastal outing.
Their men’s team will also use the match to launch their campaign for top honours after being in the cold for two years. The team was promoted to the Premier League together with the defunct Telkom after winning their Division One title.
Sylvia Kamau, Strathmore women’s tactician, said the Mombasa duel will be tight, but her team was well prepared for the match. "We know it will be a tight fixture," she said yesterday.
