LIBERIA : Basketball Playoffs Heat Up
A big clash was witnessed by basketball fans at the Sports Commission on Broad Street when bitter archrivals LPRC Oilers and NPA Pythons began their battle for a place in the grand final of the 2008 basketball championship.
NPA Pythons finished the second round of the regular season on fourth place after eliminating Mighty Barrolle in their final match recently. Pythons were therefore placed against second place LPRC Oilers as per the pairing rule created by the Liberia Basketball Federation (LBF).
LPRC Oilers, runners-up last year, and NPA Pythons, 2007 champions, are now involved in a best-out-of-three series.
However, the first match between the two clubs on Friday, April 25, 2008 was cancelled due to downpour of rain.
Prior to the match between LPRC Oilers and NPA Pythons, there were other playoff matches among teams from the lower divisions, also taking place the same day.
In game one, St. Paul Crushers lost to Barnersville Celtics 65-75 in a third division showdown, whereas K-Deltas whipped Survivors 60-53 in the female category.
On Saturday, April 26, 2008, second division side Wildcats went down to Sacbase 61-66 before female club Phoenix surrendered to Commissioners 36-54. The final match was a 88-83 victory for Uhuru Kings over Dream Team I. Uhuru Kings now awaits the grand final after winning two straight matches, with no need for a third encounter.
There were additional matches on Sunday, April 27, 2008. FUBBA was unfortunate with a 48-58 loss to Georgia Raptors in the third division. Thereafter, Dream Team II won Cardinals 70-56 in the second division. LPRC Oilers overcame NPA Anchors 64-63 in the last match of the day.
The LBF playoffs began in the various divisions on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at the Sports Commission.
The day one of the playoffs saw Georgia Raptors whipping FUBBA 57-46 in division three. Later, Cardinals outclassed Dream Team II 85-73 in the second division. The final match produced an 83-80 points victory for Uhuru Kings over Dream Team I in the first division.
Meanwhile, the 2008 Playoffs will continue on Tuesday, April 29, 2008 with two matches. Barnersville Celtics will play St. Paul Crushers and Sacbase versus Wildcats.
