RWANDA : Owuor Challenges His Lions
Julius Mbaraga
Kigali
Cliff Owuor is expecting his 'APR Indomitable Lions' to bounce back immediately from Sunday's defeat against Marines ahead of this year's Kigali Challenge Cup set for this month.
The Zone V champions who were chasing for their third successive Heroes trophy were humbled with a 64-76 defeat against a classy Marine side in the final.
Afterwards, the Kenyan trainer admitted that Marines had been the better side through out the game.
"I felt that we were below par in many areas of the game and Marines capitalized on our mistakes. We also lacked coordination while Marines played as a unit. "The pressure is now on us to prove to everyone that we are still the best side in the country. Everyone knows what we are capable of but we have to prove that by getting back to winning ways," admitted the ex-Kenyan international.
Since 2004, APR had been at the helm of Rwanda's basketball not until last year when they lost the league title to Marines. Marine's heroics last Sunday clearly showed how the side has come of age since 2005 when it made its debut appearance in the top flight.
On their way to lifting last year's league trophy, the Gisenyi based side had finished fourth and third in 2005 and 2006 respectively.
