NIGERIA : Zenith League - Big Teams Maintain Wining Stature
by Pius Ayinor
Lagos
All top teams in the Zenith Bank Basketball League have maintained their big name status by winning all the matches played so far as the 2008 season opening series continue at the Abuja National Stadium.
Defending champions First Bank, last year's runners up Dolphins, Delta Force and Customs have won all three matches played in this first phase of the league.
Yesterday, Delta Force of Asaba defeated Sunshine Angels of Akure 63-47 in the very first game of the day. The Angels of Akure could not tap into the atmosphere as they were beaten even as worshippers sang gloriously in the early morning of Sunday.
Customs were expected to beat Plateau Rocks of Jos and they did just that. The Customs girls though, showed some fatigue following the late Saturday battle against the Sunshine Angels.
Customs won that match on Saturday by 75-72. The close shave explains the very thin margin separating both teams in terms of talent quality and experience.
Both teams have battle for supremacy in the last three seasons.
The third match of yesterday was between First Bank and AHIP Queens of Kano. The Elephant Girls expectedly won that match by 78-29.
But while the big teams are winning, AHIP, Plateau and FCT Angels are yet to win any match. Their hopes lie in their own games against each other.
The matches will continue this morning from 10am through 8pm when the last game of the day would be rounding off.
The tournament ends on Saturday.
