by Pius Ayinor

The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) received N16m from Zenith Bank Plc as sponsorship fee for the 2007/08 season of the Zenith Bank League, which is billed to start next week in Abuja. The cheque for the sum was handed to the Federation yesterday in a brief media ceremony held at the Boardroom of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) at the Lagos National Stadium.

The AGM/Head Corporate Communications of Zenith Mr Timeyin Ejoor, who represented the Managing Director of the Bank, said the organisation remains joyful with the partnership with the NBBF.
"When we began the sponsorship of basketball, we simply wanted an avenue to encourage the youths of this country by building them and developing their capacity. We are in this sponsorship because we want to use basketball channel in giving back to the society.
"We are glad with the way the Federation is handling the league and indeed we have no cause to regret our partnership with the NBBF," Timeyin said.

The Second Vice-president of the Federation Mrs Vivienne Eze, who represented the President, told the gathering that the NBBF is thankful to God for bringing Zenith Bank the way of the Federation.
"The NBBF is indeed appreciative to Zenith Bank for meeting our financial obligations. We really thank God for bringing Zenith - one of the biggest and best banks in Africa - our way. From less than N8m in the first year we have moved up every year such that in such a short time the sponsorship figure has more than doubled," Eze said.

The league which is holding in its fourth season will start on the 26th with the arrival of the 10 female teams in Abuja. The actual court actions will start two days after with the game between defending champions First Bank and FCT Queens of Abuja. That game is billed for 10am while the match between last season's runners up Dolphins and Plateau Rocks will commence two hours after.

FCT Queens and Rocks are the two new teams in the system. Eight teams featured last season.
