TANZANIA : Vijana labour for Super Cup

Dar es Salaam regional basketball champions, Vijana 'City Bulls' have embarked on strategies to reclaim Kili Super Cup title which they lost to Oilers in the 2006 league season.

The team's head coach Bahati Mgunda told Sunday Citizen yesterday that he has doubled the training to give extra drilling time to his youthful players.

"We have a number of young players who need sufficient training to withstand energetic play of Savio and JKT. I have to work more on the physical rather than technical aspect which I have thoroughly worked on prior to the Kili RBA League," said Mgunda who was last week crowned the best basketball coach this season.

Mgunda, who changed the team's playstyle from individual showmanship to team work basis, said he was impressed with the way his team play at the moment.

He said the newly-recruited players such as Salum Mchemba and Alphonce Kusekwa have managed to form formidable playing partnership with experienced players such as Mohamed Alli Dibo, Jacob Marenga and John Mcharo.

Mgunda said clinching Kili RBA title was just the beginning of the four title chase his team planned in the 2008 basketball season.

"After Kili Super Cup, our next focus will be the National Basketball League (NBL) which will be held in Tanga and later Union Cup whose venue is not yet to be disclosed," said the coach.

Vijana clinched the Kili Super Cup in 2004, but lost it to Oilers in 2005. JKT who won the event in 2006 are the defending champions.
