TANZANIA : Mbeya beat Mara in basketball thriller

Mbeya region basketball team yesterday laboured to defeat Mara by 61-57 points in a tension packed encounter of the ongoing Taifa Cup championship played at the National indoor stadium in Dar es Salaam.
The dazzling Mbeya side has shown all indications that they are a team to reckon with in the championship. The winners were ahead by 31-24 points as the game approached half way mark.
Fast moving Godfrey Malike and Adam Haroun inspired their team as they scored 15 and eight points respectively.
Gibson George and Nyakisopela Hamis managed 12 and eight points for the losing side. Mbeya team are back in action today as they play against Coast region at the same venue.
In another match Ruvuma were back in contention as they trounced Dodoma by 57-56 points in a closely contested encounter.
Ruvuma lost 30-60 points at the hands of the star studded Dar es Salaam team on Monday played impressively to emerge victorious.
Dodoma started yesterday's match promisingly to end the first quarter with a stalemate of 14-14. Ruvuma made a strong come back to take a narrow 43-42 lead at half time.
Mkumbo Mgendi and Himid Choka scored 17 and 12 points respectively to inspire their team to victory while Dodoma's Mohamedy Hashimu and Ron Kalembo scored 17 and 8 points respectively.
In another match Morogoro team beat Mwanza by 32 - 25 points as the winners led 21-11 at the half way mark. Shinyanga breezed past Ruvuma by 42 - 34 points.
Today's fixture will involve matches between Mara vs Pemba, Dar es Salaam vs Mwanza, Lindi vs Shinyanga, Tabora vs Tanga, Kilimanjaro vs Unguja and Pwani vs Mbeya.
