NIGERIA : Afrobasket '07: Nigeria team departs today
Nigeria women basketball team and defending champion of the FIBA Africa Championship for Women will today leave the shore of the Nigeria for Dakar, Senegal aboard Virgin Nigeria Airways.
The Nigerian team is made up of 12 players and 3 coaches led by Kevin Cook, the players were selected after a rigorous training period that last about three weeks at the sports complex of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
According to the Secretary General of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, NBBF, Francis Gbiri nine foreign-base and three home base players.
He gave the names of the players as captain, Mfon Udoka, Mercy Okorie, Ononiwu Chisaokwu, Ekworomadu Joyce, Ugochukwu Oha, Charity Egenti and Sefi Mojidi.
Others are Olayinka Sanni, Marie Izidor Enjol and the trio of First Bank basketball club players, Chioma Udeaja, Funmilayo Ojelabi-Ogunleye and Amaka Adibeli.
Coach Cook is to be assisted by the duo of Scott Nnaji of Nigeria Customs basketball team and Adewumi Aderemi of First Bank.
Nigeria will begin her title defence against Cameroon on Friday in group-B, on Saturday the Udoka led side will battle Angola while it will confront archrival DR. Congo on Sunday before going for a day rest.
Upon resumption of matches next Tuesday the defending champion will take to the court against Cape Verde and round off her group games against Kenya with Thies as venue.
