KENYA : Team plans friendlies ahead of Algiers games

The National women’s basketball team has lined up three friendly matches to help select the 12 players who will make the trip to Algiers for the All Africa Games.

Head coach Ronnie Owino said out of the 16 players currently in training, four will be dropped by the end of the week to make room for the final team to fine-tune ahead of the Algiers Games, which kick off on July 12.

Owino was, however, categorical that the four overseas-based players will make the trip after proving to be good.

“Am quite impressed with the players’ performance but must single out the four players Marion Githegi (UK), Josephine Owino, Rose Ouma and Lorraine Achieng (US), who have all proved to be very good,” he said.

Owino is full of praise for Josephine Owino, who arrived on Thursday and joined the players in training on Friday as one player who will definitely put Kenya in the medal brackets for the first time ever.

“She trained with the rest of the players on Friday, but from what I saw, she is in a class of her own and should even perform better after staying with the rest of the team for two weeks,” he said.

The coach said the Union University Lady Bulldog Centre is posting well, rebounding well and has the shot. Owino, who left the country in 2004, has a problem adjusting to the Nairobi weather.
